Residents receive care specifically designed to meet their needs. Residents also choose Inglis House to pursue many of their interests, hobbies and educational goals through the social enrichment programs we offer. Social Enrichment Programs

Inglis House residents pursue many interests and hobbies, which are an important part of everyone’s well being. Our wide variety of social, spiritual, volunteer, leisure and educational programs is one of the main reasons people with physical disabilities choose to live here. The Social Enrichment Program offers creative and performing arts, sports programs, computer and educational pursuits as well as regularly scheduled parties and trips. How can you get involved? Here’s a sampling:

Red Arrow You don’t have to be a computer whiz to enjoy technology. Our accessible computer lab is one of the most popular places for residents to gather. Never use a computer before? That’s okay. You’ll benefit from computer instruction and the latest in adaptive devices to help you get the most out of your computer time. Keep in touch with family and friends or surf the net with free email and internet access.
Red Arrow Are you an artist at heart? If so, don’t give up your dream. We offer a variety of creative and performing arts activities from painting and poetry to music therapy. Resident artists display their work in public galleries, have their poetry published and perform regularly in the resident choir.
Red Arrow Inglis House residents party with the best of them. That’s why we host a number of celebrations and events throughout the year. Put on your best party clothes and attend a ball, or celebrate holidays with festive performances.
Red Arrow Anyone for sports? Get involved in sports and leisure activities like the Inglis House Shuffleboard League, Chess Club and Wheelchair Power Soccer. Or, participate in the Annual Keen Games sports competition. We even have accessible pinball machines.
Red Arrow Self improvement can be fun. That’s why our educational programs are so popular among Inglis House residents. Earn your college degree, or take non-credit courses like creative writing and cooking, or join the book club. You can also facilitate a social enrichment program for your fellow residents upon completion of our Leadership Training Program.
Red Arrow Residents’ spiritual needs are diverse. The Inglis House Pastoral Care Program will help you carry on your faith traditions. Attend Catholic, Christian, Jewish or Muslim services and also enjoy religious discussion groups and pastoral visits. The full-time chaplain and three part-time chaplains, as well as a number of visiting clergy, minister to residents’ spiritual needs.
Red Arrow Like to keep busy while earning a little extra money? Why not join the Resident Workers Program. You can help with data entry, clerical assignments and reception. Or, work in the in-house mail room as a mail carrier. It’s a great way to stay on the move and make friends with your fellow residents and staff.

Social Services

Social workers at Inglis House advocate for residents through listening, assisting, counseling, investigating, coordinating, accessing, problem solving and educating. By doing so, they help residents take advantage of available medical, rehabilitative and social enrichment programs, which promote mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. At Inglis House, we believe families play an important role in the care of each resident, too. To that end, families are invited to join in individual and group counseling offered by social workers. If residents wish to move to another facility or to independent living, social workers will help with the planning.

Community Re-entry Program

Many Inglis House residents want to return to independent living. The transition requires a number of adjustments. To make a successful move, many residents enroll in the Inglis House Community Re-entry Program, which helps them develop the skills they need to live independently. 100% of residents who discharged since 2002 through the Program continue to enjoy their independent lifestyle.

Participants learn to coordinate their own medical, personal and rehabilitative care, and develop independent living skills in the following areas:

Red Arrow Financial matters
Red Arrow Vocational goals
Red Arrow Educational pursuits
Red Arrow Social and recreational activities

In partnership with the Community Re-entry team, residents in this program develop independent living skills first-hand by going out into the community and experiencing daily life activities like shopping, coordinating their own transportation, banking and going to entertainment venues. They also experience what it is like to live on their own through independent living trials, temporarily living in an apartment on the Inglis House campus, so they are fully prepared once they complete the program. For continued support, participants also may receive mentoring and counseling from former Community Re-entry participants.
