The Challenge: Accessibility at Home for the Disability Community
Pennsylvania has one of the highest populations of people with disabilities living in the community. We also have one of the oldest housing stocks in the country, with almost 80% of housing built prior to the introduction of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. An inaccessible home limits a person’s independence, leading to isolation, a lack of opportunities to engage in work or other pursuits, as well as a negative impact on key social determinants of health.
The Opportunity: Offering More Options to Promote Independence
Home modification services are one way Inglis is addressing barriers to accessible housing for people with physical and mobility disabilities. However, traditional funding sources for home modifications don’t always provide the flexibility to truly tap into a home’s accessibility potential. The new Inglis Independence at Home Fund will make more homes accessible by going beyond traditional funding streams to:
- complete more extensive home modifications
- make the repairs that are current barriers to modification
- integrate assistive technology into a person’s home
Thank you for your support!
